Before I start, I want you all to give a slow clap, and start feeling more proud of the country we live in, the incredible India.
India has done it again, once again the government has created a new level of executing an action which completely makes no sense and holds no concrete justification. I am sure all of you have heard and maybe some of you viewed the documentary by Leslee Udwin (India’s Daughter) which covers about the brutal, bone chilling Delhi gang rape which occurred on 16 December 2012. But that’s not the point, the point is that banning it from being telecast in India, An FIR against BBC channel and last but not the least a fatal attempt of the government to completely remove it from the world wide just shows that India is not yet ready to face the ugly truth and would rather take the easy way out than to face the truth and take measures to do something about it.
It’s not only the ban which shocks me the most but also the statements of higher authorities who claim to run our country and make it a better and safe place. So come on let’s have a look at what they said, and what I said after hearing them.
1. First, they shock us with their lack of governance; the minister of home affairs asks how the film makers were provided permissions to enter the highly secured facility.
The home minister doesn’t even know what actions are taken under their nose.
2. Second, they claim that making documentaries and airing them on television will provide a platform and encouragement for further crime.
Yeah right, I didn’t have any idea that rapists prefer to watch news channels first to take encouragements for committing crime.
3. Third, the remorseless statement of the rapist in the documentary is going to create an outcry and panic amongst the people.
OH OK, like the incident itself was not enough.
4. Fourth, the documentary will be bad for India’s reputation and tourism.
Great, innocent girls are getting killed and all the government is worried about its reputation and tourism. Big clap guys I couldn’t feel any more proud.
Women’s safety has been an unsolved issue for as long as we can remember. We have seen many making claims to make India a safer place for women but still rape, sex violence, injustices continue. From 2012- 2015 nothing has yet changed. This brings too many why’s in my head. If the government believes that the documentary would be a threat to India’s reputation, then why didn’t it take safety of women seriously? In 2012 Delhi alone witnessed 702 rape cases. The no of molestation, beating and sex, violence cases still continues. Why is it that nothing is done about it?
Why, in spite of living in the 21st century women are still blamed more for being raped rather than the rapist? Why women are still dominated, but no measures are taken to teach the males about women respect? Why is it that on one side where India tells to save daughter and educate daughter (Beti bachao Beti padhao abhiyaan) but on the other side, they try to hide the ugly truth that everyone has the right to know that soulless people like the rapist still do exist within our surroundings? Why is it that the Indian government denies to wake up even after the complete demolish of an innocent girl’s life? Why is it that the government takes measures after the victim takes her last breath? Why is it that the government is worried about India’s reputation first than the continuation of crimes on women?
One thing is for sure, the answers to my question are far away from being answered, but now India is going to be viewed as a country which always looks for an easy way out. Though it claims to be a democratic country, but at the end it sure knows how to choke someone’s democracy out of them. It’s ok for them if a woman gets raped and violated but it’s not ok if someone tries to protest against it or if anyone tries to show the shocking mentality of the rapist, and the excruciating pain which a victim and their parents go through.
All I have to say is that if this stupidity, hypocrisy, and fail to stand concrete on their promises regarding women’s safety by the government continues, then the fate of our country is going to be very disappointing for all of us.
