Why Is India Still Such A Corrupt Nation? The Answer Lies In This Story.

In the movie ‘Rang De Basanti’ it was clearly shown how the youth can bring a change in the system. There is a storm that has risen up in our nation and yet a more severe is waiting in the future if the nation’s call is unanswered.

It is very noxious to state that honesty is no more a quality; rather it’s simply ‘LACK OF OPPORTUNITY’. Corruption has made life easier in India. It is we who say that corruption is abhorrent to us and on the other hand bribe some government ‘BABUS’ to get our work done. It is we, who carry a general train ticket and travel in sleeper class by bribing the TTE and it is we who don’t care to wear a helmet or carry our license because we know that a 50 Rs note is enough. Also it is we who are ignorant towards our political rights and later blame the system. Another reason why we Indians cannot free ourselves till now from the clutches of corruption is because of our pessimistic and ‘CHALTA HAI’ attitude. We are not ready to take the responsibility on us, but castigate about the political setup of our country.

An incident that happened in my college proves this.

‘Green-ovation’ (college-event), which was conducted by the Renewable Energy Club, encouraged students to save energy resources, and point out faults due to which energy goes wasted. I managed to get few videos covertly that showed the ground reality. Though the professors were not at their respective cubicles but the electrical appliances were still running, which is a total wastage of energy. As I have stated earlier, we were told to submit the videos of faults that we come, across a vague idea of submitting this particular clip came to my mind.

“Stop being impulsive, Dude. You are not the only one who’s there to care about the whole world”, my right part of the brain ordered me. My other part of the brain was telling me ‘this is why we INDIANS are suffering’. I was totally into a dilemma as what to do. But finally the logical part of my turned out to be victorious. I decided not to do so as I could be the easy target of the professors for acting over smart. It will be foolish and childish on my part for acting impulsively and carry the grudges of the Professors. If I myself, that too at college level is ‘afraid’ to take the responsibility what will I do for my nation!

Same thing happens at the national level too. People give a damn to the responsibilities. That day I realized why we Indians are a failure in the war against corruption. We are selfish and cannot dare to do bigger things. This is the reason why the criminals remain scot-free even after doing nefarious activities.

Is this the legacy that we will pass to our coming generation? We are proud of our ancestors and remember them for their contribution to India’s independence, but for what reason should our coming generation remember us? Stats say more than half the population of India are youngsters. We are not just a ship which is still docked in the harbour. We are a fleet of ships! No battle-ships who can dare to change the system. Is it not painful to see our nation crippled? And is it not our responsibility to clean the drain and provide a better living place for the future to come? Do we want to be remembered as ‘COWARD and SELFISH’, do we?

Still we have time and a ray of hope. It is we and only we who are the real players. Nation is calling and responds to the call. Rise up and come forward. Be brave and have guts to retaliate the wrong. Let’s obliterate the name corruption from the minds of Indians. Just don’t be mere spectators similar to the ships docked in the harbour. Be the one with grit and valor and face the rough seas.
