Stay Safe Women: I’m Confident To Travel Alone With These 4 Apps Up My Sleeve

Stay Safe Women: I’m Confident To Travel Alone With These 4 Apps Up My Sleeve

October 25, 2015 by

Women in India have travelled a long way. From the secured confines of home, women have come out in the open to prove themselves. We find them in all walks of life, in all professions, no more restraining themselves to the traditional role of a homemaker only. In doing so, women need to move alone, literally in physical sense. Sometimes, in such situations she is vulnerable. You know, I know, and every other Indian knows this. Women aren’t safe in India. There are countless examples where women are subjected to harassments, eve teasing, rape and violence.

Below are some of the armours to protect in case of need.

  • Nirbhaya: Be Fearless App

The Nirbhaya app has some really cool options to alert your friends and family whenever you are in potential danger. With every 300 meters, your location gets updated automatically. You can also keep your closed ones informed about your current whereabouts with the Geo Fence option. You send a distress call or message with a single touch. It lets you push the power button which then sends a customised SOS message to a group (No data plan required for this). Now you can choose and select the members of this group within the app. [Get It Here]

  • VithU App

Forget the good old methods of unlocking the screen, opening the app and taking action. With the VithU app activated on your phone, pushing the power button twice will send alert messages. The receiver will be aroused to your sense of danger on receiving SOS alert message along with your physical location (in the form of a link). It does not require any data pack. [Get it Here]

  • Stay Secure App

This app is my personal favourite. It’s got some pretty handy features crafted specially for such kind of a situation. You don’t have to panic when your friends or family members aren’t nearby or are unavailable for some reason. ‘Alert nearby’ option will alert nearby people and automatically request them for help. Sounds great, right? The Auto Answer will automatically answer any incoming call for you in an emergency situation, which will help the caller construe the situation in an effective way. It also has a Fake power off option which prevents any kind of attempt made to power off the set. [Get it Here]

  • Me Against Rape

The reason I have included this app is because of the widget option it has. You can see from the snapshot that the widget has a simple one touch ‘Help’ and ‘Start’ option, on the home screen of your mobile. It also has a Start/Stop option which functions as a recorder (useful for collecting evidence).  The recorded file is saved in the form of audio file in your phone’s SD Card. [Get it Here]

Not always do I have the safe company of friends, boyfriend or any known acquaintance with me while travelling. I am an independent woman, and I go to parties, I travel alone, I return late night. And when alone, I make sure that my smartphone is my best friend. If you happen to use any other app, please join the discussion. Let’s make the country a safer place for women.
