Thinking Of A Career Option After Finishing Engineering: An Irony Which Exists Only In India

Thinking Of A Career Option After Finishing Engineering: An Irony Which Exists Only In India

March 14, 2016 by

Engineering done, now what?  A question that runs through almost every engineer who either did not get placed, or completed engineering in more than 4 years.

There are almost 3000 colleges for engineering in India and a total of 1.5 million engineers that pass out each year. Unemployment is sure.

When a student completes his 10th, there is a question that arises in the minds of majority of the students, “Now what?” Few of them decide it beforehand, but few who have no source to get information, go on to do either diploma or take up mathematics in class 12th. Even our parents have just two options in their mind; engineering or medical.

Most of the engineers chase their dream only after they become an engineer, till then it’s just an education system and another set of exams they need to clear.

Not every child is an IITian, but can be a fashion designer or a journalist or can be in any other profession. And only a child can find that in himself. India has got one of the best universities for journalism, mass communication, fashion designing, then why is it that only engineering colleges get the highest number of admissions with the other courses have seats left.

It’s us who need to take the blame. A child if given the right way to choose for himself, he can contribute so much to the society, country and also for himself to go to bed content.

When a child is born, we decide his religion, name, relations and eventually when he grows, up we guide him to his school. And then comes the college, where we can just guide him and not force him. Every individual in this country has a right to choose for himself, what we can do is guide with the pros and cons for the idea he has chosen because what matters in the end is experience that a parent has more than the child.

Sport in our country is encouraged only till the level where it is good for our heath. It is never considered good for our future. Kids these days are forced into engineering to study, get a job and earn for themselves. But then what? What about the dreams he had seen when he was young? Well, the child then goes and chases his dream and picks a career completely different. If this is the case, why waste the valuable 4 years of the life and not go to sleep peacefully. Why keep the dream, a dream?

The media coverage and also the newspapers are so much inclined towards engineering that there are advertisements all over the pages to promote engineering institutes with the topper’s name. Well, why not for the toppers of fashion designing? Why is this field left? There is no news on the various exams conducted for design or journalism or any such rising field where our country needs to compete. And then we blame the government for not offering career opportunities.

It is not about having a job and earning but about a child and his dreams.
